While many aromatic characteristics are shared across frankincense species such as frereana and carterii, frereana is especially prized by perfumers for its bold presence, smooth depth, and remarkable ability to anchor and unify blends. Its scent carries strength and refinement without overwhelming other notes, making it a preferred choice in fine fragrance work.

Frankincense has been traded and valued for over 5,000 years, historically used as incense, incorporated into traditional preparations, and added to cosmetics and perfumery. Frankincense resin is carefully harvested through a traditional method known as striping, in which the bark of the resilient trees is gently slashed to allow resin to emerge and harden into aromatic tears. In general, more opaque resin tears are considered indicators of superior quality.
