A study on ‘Olfactory Influences,’ published in PubMed in 2017, found clear and consistent evidence that lemon oil inhalation enhances positive mood and increases the release of norepinephrine.
As a neurotransmitter (chemical messenger) in the central nervous system, norepinephrine can improve energy, increase alertness and arousal, as well as speed reaction time. Norepinephrine, also known as noradrenaline, is both a hormone and a brain neurotransmitter, or chemical.
Norepinephrine increases heart rate and blood pressure, triggers the release of glucose from energy stores and increases blood flow to skeletal muscle.
Low levels of norepinephrine can cause lethargy, inattention, and lack of focus and concentration. Low levels of norepinephrine can result in alterations in sex and adrenal hormones can cause neurotransmitter imbalances.
Low levels of norepinephrine may lead to conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, and hypotension (very low blood pressure).
Low levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine can contribute to a variety of physical and mental conditions, including:
- Anxiety.
- Depression.
- Fibromyalgia.
- Hypoglycemia.
- Migraine headaches.
- Restless leg syndrome.
- Sleep disorders.
- Weight gan.
Scientists have discoverd that caffeine has profound effects on most of the major neurotransmitters, including norepinephrine.
Studies in humans have shown that caffeine increases both cortisol (stress hormones) and epinephrine (improves energy and alertness) at rest. It was shown that levels of cortisol after caffeine consumption are similar to those experienced during an acute attack of stress. Drinking coffee has the effect of re-creating stressful conditions in the body.
While essential oils increase your norepinephrine levels without having such adverse, detrimental effect.
Research is now showing that dieting and exercise will not help you lose weight. In fact, dieting leads to weight gain. This is called ‘dieting-induced weight gain.
Medications have been developed that specifically target your ‘type’ of weight gain problem.
However, ALL types of weight gain issues need increased levels of norepinephrine.
