The Greatest Love Story Ever Told: Making Friends with Your Shadow

“The door to my heart opens inward. I move through forgiveness to love and as I change my thoughts, the world around me changes; the past is over and has no power now.”      — Louise Hay, author of You Can Heal Your Life

I first discovered the shadow as a young child. I didn't understand what it was, but I knew it was there, creating confusion about whether I was a good person or not. By age 20, I was searching for answers and fortunately found a Jungian-trained therapist who helped me begin understanding the shadow.

Years of self-discovery have taught me that freedom comes from bringing the unconscious into consciousness and allowing the conditioned identity we have mistaken for ourselves to fall away. As we recognize, meet, and integrate our shadow, our Authentic Self—the deeper truth of who we are—can shine through.

Essential oils have been trusted allies throughout my journey. Cypress and Helichrysum are the two key oils I return to in shadow work: Cypress supports release, forgiveness, and letting go, while Helichrysum offers support when we are meeting old emotional wounds, shock, and grief.

I hope what I have learned along this journey helps you discover your own path toward greater freedom, wholeness, and self-understanding.

Shadow work is energy work.

The shadow is an invisible, energetic component of the psyche—made up of emotions, beliefs, memories, fears, and qualities we have pushed out of conscious awareness.

Although invisible, we experience the shadow through our thoughts, emotions, relationships, behaviors, and reactions to life. When unconscious material becomes conscious, the energy bound up in suppression, resistance, projection, shame, and fear becomes available for awareness, integration, growth, and healing.

Healing the shadow isn't about destroying the parts of ourselves we reject. It is about bringing them home.

What Is the Shadow? Understanding Shadow Work

The shadow is made up of the parts of ourselves we learned to hide or reject because we believed they were unacceptable, unsafe, or unlovable. Everyone has a unique shadow, and we begin to recognize it through our emotional triggers.

Triggers can bring up fear, anger, shame, grief, or resentment—often with an intensity that seems greater than the present situation warrants. Fear is a key emotion of the shadow, and resistance is one of its primary expressions.

The shadow also reveals itself through projection. When we disown something within ourselves, we may judge or blame others for reflecting it back to us.

This doesn't mean other people's misbehavior is acceptable. It means our reactions can become opportunities for self-awareness. Shadow work is inner work. It is about you and your reaction to life situations.

Instead of asking, “What's wrong with them?” ask:

“What is this reaction showing me about myself?”

This is where shadow work becomes transformative.

Affirmation: “I am willing to let go of my need for resistance.:

Healing the Shadow: Cypress Essential Oil for Love & Forgiveness

Love and forgiveness are at the heart of shadow work. When painful emotions remain suppressed, they can shape how you experience yourself and others. Forgiveness doesn't mean approving of what may have happened—it means releasing your attachment to the pain unmasked by your reaction and choosing freedom.

Cypress essential oil is a powerful ally for shadow work, symbolizing transition, release, and renewal. Its association with Pluto, Lord of the Underworld, reinforces the symbolism of allowing what is finished to die so something new can emerge.

Emotionally, Cypress can support you when you are holding on, resisting, or closing your heart.

Try inhaling Cypress while you:

  1. Offer love and forgiveness to yourself or another.
  2. Bring awareness to your heart and allow what is happening without resistance.
  3. Release the need to control the outcome and allow life to unfold.

Breathe deeply and allow yourself to soften.

Affirmation: “Life is happening for me and unfolds perfectly.”

Healing the Shadow: The Role of Beliefs & Emotions

Your beliefs about yourself and life can create subconscious patterns of fear and resistance, often rooted in stories formed early in life: I'm not good enough. I'm not safe. I have to be in control.

The first step isn't to change the belief, but to become aware. Breathe, relax, and notice what is happening without automatically following the story.

Inhaling Cypress or Helichrysum can serve as a sensory anchor, helping you pause and turn inward rather than react.

Instead of asking, “Why is this happening to me?” ask:

“What am I feeling right now?”

With practice, this simple awareness creates space between the trigger and your response—and that space is where transformation begins.

Emotional Triggers & Healing the Shadow

An emotional trigger occurs when an event brings up an intense emotional response that feels larger than the present situation. Instead of believing the story—Why does this always happen to me?—become curious about the emotion underneath it: anger, fear, shame, grief, helplessness, or rejection.

The emotion is often the doorway into the shadow.

Helichrysum essential oil is my key oil for this stage, particularly when old emotional wounds or shock surface.

Don't fight the trigger. Receive it. Notice it. Breathe. Discover what it is showing you.

Healing the Shadow: The Stages of Shadow Work

The dissolution of the shadow can happen in stages, like peeling an onion. Denial, anger, grief, fear, surrender, and freedom may arise in different cycles as unconscious patterns become conscious.

First Stage: Denial

Denial may involve fear, shame, blame, victimization, or projection.

Affirmation: “It is safe for me to see the truth.”

Rose Geranium, Ylang Ylang III, Sweet Orange, Tangerine, and Sweet Marjoram can complement Cypress and Helichrysum during this stage.

Second Stage: Anger

Chronic anger and frustration often reflect resistance and a desire to regain control. Rather than suppressing or acting on anger, become conscious of the emotion underneath. Fear is often the emotion you'll discover behind most reactions which express as resistance to what is happening.

Atlas Cedarwood, Lavender, and Ylang Ylang III can complement Cypress and Helichrysum.

🦋 The key is simple: become conscious of your emotional triggers and release them. Breathe into your reaction, face and feel it within yourself, and release it with your breath. Essential oils can really help you relax and let go. Emotional triggers in most cases only last less than a minute. The more you release the faster the letting go of shadow material. Overtime you will stop attracting situations that trigger negative emotions like fear and anger.

Shadow Healing Ritual

This simple ritual brings together awareness, emotional triggers, resistance, forgiveness, and release.

1. Create Your Space

Sit quietly and breathe slowly. Place one drop each of Cypress and Helichrysum on a tissue or personal inhaler and gently inhale.

2. Notice

Ask: “What am I feeling right now?”
Simply notice the emotion without judging or trying to change it.

3. Find the Trigger

Bring to mind something creating resistance. Ask:
“What is this situation showing me about myself?”
“What am I afraid this means?”

4. Release

Place your attention on your heart and breathe with Cypress. Silently say:

“I am willing to let go of my need to resist.”

5. Heal & Forgive

Breathe with Helichrysum and offer compassion to the part of yourself that has been wounded and feels pain.

Say:

“I see you. I hear you. You don't have to hide anymore.”

Then place your hand over your heart:

“I forgive myself. I release what I no longer need to carry. I choose freedom.”

6. Return to the Present

Take several breaths. Feel your feet on the floor and notice your surroundings. You are here, now—not in the past.

Finally, ask yourself:

“How would I choose to respond from my Authentic Self?”

Then let the experience rest. There is nothing more you need to do today.

Healing the Shadow: Moving Through Fear, Resistance & Forgiveness

Healing the shadow isn't about eliminating difficult emotions; it is about becoming conscious enough to experience them without allowing them to define who you are.

This may be some of the most important Energy Medicine work you can do—for yourself and for humanity. You cannot create lasting peace in the world while being at war within your own psyche.

When you divide yourself into good and bad parts, you project that division onto others. Shadow work offers another possibility: accepting your wholeness as a given while accepting both shadow and light aspects of your psyche.

You are not your thoughts or behavior. You can take responsibility, mature, and change how you treat yourself and others without deciding that you—or anyone else—is fundamentally bad. Behavior can change, you can make different choices.

As awareness deepens, you recognize the interconnectedness between all things and begin to understand that shadow work is ultimately spiritual work—a journey of discovering and expressing your authentic Self, your Soul essence.

The door to your heart opens inward.

When you heal the split within yourself, you no longer need to project your unconscious shadow onto the world.

Healing the shadow is the alchemy of making whole what has been splintered—a lifelong way of living with greater grace, compassion, and understanding.

Some negative emotions that get triggered by your shadow don't begin with you. They can be inherited through family patterns and unresolved ancestral experiences.
